Just thinking of Motion City Soundtrack takes me fondly back to 2005, in my poster littered room, where I first discovered their track ‘L.G Fuad’ that is more recognised today from its hook ‘Let’s Get Fucked up and Die’. The comical chorus that won my attention back then still impresses me today for its ability summarise the most cryptic of pop punk songs today. Almost five years on and a couple of LP’s later, we’re presented with their latest track titled ‘Her Words Destroyed My Planet’ and the brainchild of sleepless nights in front of the TV watching Veronica Mars box sets. Surely, this alone points to yet another fun blurb.
When the track starts off, you’re presented with a tempo that wholeheartedly promises to explode at any time and without disappointment, it delivers amazingly within seconds. The track throughout, without doubt comes up trumps in providing the energy to keep the listeners head nodding at home whilst igniting mosh pits for at least the next few months.
Searching for faults, you could perhaps look beyond the artists obvious yet successful intentions at creating a bouncy dance track by picking at some of the classic ‘copy-and-paste’ lyrics. Although it seems that almost all pop punk tracks speak about the same regret and failure, the saving grace of Motion City Soundtrack is their ability to allow humour to transcend from their misery, and without omission in this track, they liken their failure to dinosaur’s hopes and dreams.
‘Her Words Destroyed My Planet’ is not a Fall Out Boy track that makes obvious attempts to be clever, and nor is it a Blink 182 track that will be indefinitely lovable. It is instead, a solid track that will keep you on your feet until the next big pop song comes along.
