Acoustic versions of previously released records remain an odd offshoot of the alternative genre. Reasons for these vary from the cynical – contractual agreements with record labels, hiding the delay between two releases – to the positive – a band reinventing their sound for a brief moment in their career. In most cases acoustic releases offer the means for a band to showcase their musical ability; acoustic music cannot hide behind explosive production value or dominant instrumental effects.
Mallory Knox have fortunately chosen the latter route on their acoustic version of ‘Pilot’, although opting for three of the five songs rather than a re-imagination of the entire record. The formula is as to be expected, stripping back the heavier moments of the original mini-album and pushing the mellow atmosphere to the forefront. The biggest difference between the two records is found in lead vocals, taking further advantage of the vocal abilities of all of the band members. The result is far more delicate, especially during the original graceful moments in the three tracks. The band have succeeded in adding a new dimension to their sound despite the existence of calmer moments on the initial version.
Although any acoustic EP may incite questions of purpose or necessity, Mallory Knox have used the opportunity to push their abundant ability to the forefront. The clear crisp production further illustrates the unique nuances in Chapman’s voice, while singling out the catchy compositions and powerful lyrics which are likely to propel the band into the big-time.
This is more than simply a means to appease current fans. Mallory Knox have turned the intimacy up to 11 – it is almost possible to hear the high pitched screams as the first note of the acoustic guitar permeates through the room. The stripped back nature of the songs is delivered with a delicate passion ensuring this acoustic EP does not feel superfluous. Every moment of these three tracks is likely to remain with the listener long after the thirteen minutes are over.
