Review: Laura Mvula – Sing To The Moon (Album)

Laura Mvula’s highly anticipated debut album is finally upon us. Read what we thought about it HERE.

lauramvulaalbum325Artist: Laura Mvula
Release: Sing To The Moon
Release Date: 4th March 2013

This singer-songwriter from Birmingham has only been signed to RCA since last year but has already caused quite a stir with her original style. After much buzz and anticipation, her first record is finally released. The album begins how it continues throughout – with big, soulful vocals and beautiful melodies. ‘Like The Morning Dew’ makes you feel as though spring may have finally arrived. A powerful choir sounds like a breath of fresh air and a glint of sunshine. When the choir fades and all that’s left is Mvula’s voice, it is easy to appreciate her distinctive, soulful talent.

Much of the album is incredibly chilled out, though equally uplifting. ‘Can’t Live With The World’ is so peaceful, with light xylophone sounds that conjure up dreamlike images of a far away land. Her songs hold such delightful lyrics such as ‘sing to the moon and the stars will shine over you’, echoing the imaginative and trancelike tunes.

‘Make Me Lovely’ reveals Mvula’s vulnerable side, opening up to the listener and making her feel like an old friend. This album seems like a very personal one, with delicate lyrics like ‘I can’t make you love me, you can’t make me lovely’ for all to hear. Her words are so emotional and poignant in every single song that they are reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse, spirit oozing from every vocal chord. The entire album contains simple, light sounding instruments such as harps, pianos and soft regimented drums. They allow her beautiful voice to come to the forefront. There is no need for over production when someone has this much talent on their own. The backing choir-like vocals throughout are similar to those of Imogen Heap, adding really stirring and beautiful elements to every verse.

Her debut single ‘Green Garden’ has been very popular on Radio 1’s playlistrecently, standing strong on the record. It has an instantly loveable chorus with addictive ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ that will stick in your head all day. On the deluxe album version there is also ‘Green Garden 1’– a demo introduced by Laura herself, giving a glimpse into the beginnings of such a fabulous song.

‘That’s Alright’ is certainly the most stand out track, firstly because it is much more upbeat and in your face than the rest and secondly because of its powerful words. Its big beats match the song’s strong message. Mulva releases her inner Destiny’s Child with this well assured beast of a track, singing ‘I will never be what you want and that’s alright, I play my own damn tune, who are you to set the bar of the universe?’ This lady certainly knows how to pack a punch with style and sophistication. This is an incredible anthem for independent women everywhere.

From smooth, soulful tracks to fiery, honest lyrics – this album delves deep inside Laura Mvula’s mind and pulls out something really quite special. Incredibly talented and not afraid to tell the truth – Beyonce, you’ve got competition.
