Kings Of Leon released the amazing ‘Come Around Sundown’ last year and I couldn’t be more in love with it if I tried. As I’m a massive fan of their past albums, I instantly knew I would like what I heard and that’s exactly what happened. I thought following up an incredible album like ‘Only By The Night’ would be impossible, but once I’d heard ‘Come Around Sundown’ it became clear that Kings Of Leon had kept that sparkle within their music that I just cant get enough of.
Track one ‘The End’ was instantly one of my favourites. It’s Kings Of Leon as we all know them; laid back, raw, dark, soulful but still keeping that grungy feel. The guitars in this track are so powerful, I feel I could close my eyes and be anywhere I want to be in the world. Calebs deep southern vocals mesh perfectly to the sensational beat creating an incredible track I will never get bored of. A perfect track to kick off the album.
‘Radioactive’ was the first to be released from the album and is a very upbeat summery song. Although more upbeat than the usual Kings Of Leon track, it doesn’t step away from their vibe. The guitars and drum beats work perfectly hand in hand to create music that wont be forgotten anytime soon.
Following track ‘Pyro’ was second to be released from the album and takes a step back into the darker feel for the band. The song uses less instruments than most of their songs keeping it fresh and simple. Calebs vocals are incredible in this track as his voice manages to pass back and forth between angelic and reckless. Musical gold.
‘Mary’ is an incredibly fun rock n roll song and definitely something you would listen to whilst going out or just to put a smile on your face. The song maintains a very southern feel to it whilst still keeping a modern drum and guitar sound, and is one of those catchy songs you will notice yourself singing along too without even knowing it. This along with many of the other tracks on the album has been one of my favourites.
A very honest and humble track, ‘The Face’ is an especially a nice track. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful, and the song outlines Caleb talking about his love for a girl. I’m not much of a romantic but this song certainly pulls on the heart strings. The guitars in this track sound amazing and the song is well produced; every single word fits with the beat perfectly. This song was one of the first to be favoured off the album and still holds its place. For anyone who truly appreciates their music this track is a good place to start.
‘The Immortals’ is a more upbeat and fearless song with cutting riff’s and brilliant drum beats which any Kings Of Leon fan would truly enjoy; while following track ‘Back Down South’ is definitely a track for a sunny day. Soft and gentle beats and southern inspired guitars make for a truly great song. Instantly a classic in my eyes; beautifully sung and sounds brilliant.
‘Beach Side’ is what it says on the tin; a happy summer song, laid back and simple and one I could imagine playing on the beach. The beat is classic Kings Of Leon with effective riff’s and drum patterns. Very upbeat and positive and totally what i want to hear.
‘No Money’ is nothing short of perfect. It’s fast paced drums and guitars, mixed with lyrics we can all relate to, make for an incredibly fun track that makes you want to get up and dance.
‘Pony Up’ has a great intro using guitar twangs to create a catchy tune which they further use through out the track. Uplifting lyrics, this song is very high spirited and greatly composed.
I adore ‘Birthday’. Another high spirited song it talks about getting together and celebrating like its your birthday which we are all familiar with. The guitars remain to carry out the southern feel but avoids sounding too alike to the other tracks. This song is highly recommended for every one’s Ipods.
‘Mi Amigo’ is an amazing song. Although not as fast paced as most the songs on the album, tending to plod through with the guitar and drums, the lyrics are fascinating yet very funny, and talks about a female friend who can always take him out on the town and show him a good time, Kings Of Leon have had a lot of sexual references in songs before but even I had to burst out laughing at the lyrics; ‘I’ve got a friend, tells me to get up again, showers me in bruises, tells me I got a big old dick, And she wants my ass home’. Its certainly a great song with or without the humour I advise you all give a listen.
Last but certainly not least is track thirteen ‘Pickup Truck’ ; my favourite from the whole album. The lyrics are sincere and truly tug on the heart strings and its clear this is a love song about a girl he likes who’s with another guy, he’s showing off in his pickup truck, insults are passed and all results in a good old fashioned throwdown. Its not everyday you hear of a great song being about a fight over a girl and a pickup truck but this song is a 10 out of 10.
Kings Of Leon have once again managed to create an incredible album and I would say this was definitely my album of 2010. Hats off to you boys. ‘Come Around Sundown’ is available for download on Itunes or available to buy in most stores so grab yourself a copy and get in on the action.
