Unlike many singer/songwriters on the music scene currently Joshua Keogh teams a stunning vocal performance with beautifully constructed chord sequences behind him. Despite only being in his teens, this fresh faced young singer offers a performance with maturity and confidence beyond his years relaying stories of love, loss and being lonely.
Love, Brother, Keepsake and Stone are the tracks featured on the brand new EP and all present different themes. As Brother progresses and picks up pace it becomes clear how good his vocals really are, varying pitch and range which express sincerity and emotion. These qualities are also exhibited in Stone therefore; in turn we fall at the feet of this impressive young artist. The lyrics are definitely in keeping with the tone of the EP, deep and heartfelt in story form. The acoustic accompaniment is beautiful, sweet and delicate and all these factors contribute into making it the best of laid back music.
Individually the instruments throughout the 4 songs infuse into their beauty making it smooth and something worth listening to, a steady and consistent drum beat signals the impending chorus as the emotion and intensity builds in Love and Keepsake. The use electric guitar throughout the chorus also works perfectly in Stone against the already present acoustic; this makes it a more layered atmospheric piece still smooth but varied in rich sound.
As regards for the slower more guitar based songs, Love delivers on all accounts. The perfect song that could be the soundtrack to any long lasting romance. Sweet and accessible an already classic sounding tune.
I am sure this debut from Joshua Keogh will achieve the appreciation and success it deserves as an EP like this is few and far between. Following in the footsteps of the already critically acclaimed artists such as Ed Sheeran and Newton Faulkner we say hello to a new era of easy listening, perfectly devised material with a beautiful voice to accompany.
