Band: Hollow Giants
Release: This Girl EP
Release Date: 25th November
Birthing into the music industry from a town that is synonymous with one of the world’s biggest festivals is a sizeable challenge for any band. But Glastonbury based three-piece Hollow Giants are ready to conquer. Their weapon of choice for battle? Freshly brewed debut EP ‘This Girl’, made from the West Country’s finest musical craftsmanship.
The EP opens with the intriguingly sulky, yet devious ‘Dead In Me’, where the trio set the tone for the sound of the entire EP within milliseconds. Its a style fuelled by chopped-up riffs combined with biting drum beats, mixed with a sprinkling of slurred stirred vocals.
As the track concludes with a more agile pace, the EP filters into ‘Heaven True’, where the band’s indie influences meet contemporary rock, as it enters a heavier phase, charged by the underlying sound of a off-the-wall bass line. The EP’s third offering, ‘Round On You’ is somewhat Queens of the Stone Age-esque, as its chic riff-oreiented opening leads to grimy vocals. Even if at times the vocals are not entirely clear, its pop come indie come rock vibe is a hybrid satisfying to the ear.
As the EP concludes with its title track ‘This Girl’, the three-piece once again open with a distinct riff pattern that is uniquely individual to the track. A broody wacky bass combined with at times, deep raucous vocal chords from frontman Joe Tennant, the song lends itself to a whisper from the UK garage scene, with its consistent drum line.
To put it simply, the Hollow Giants have created a bold debut EP that genre bends and explores what the UK music scene can offer. Whilst the overall sound doesn’t change much from track to track, the potential to improve is exciting. They’ve got the vocals, the bass, the catchy riffs and harmonising drums. All it needs is a screwdriver to tighten it up those nuts and bolts, and we’ve got something brilliant on our hands.
