Irish four-piece, Funeral Suits, are set to release their debut album ‘Lily Of The Valley’ in June which was produced by none other than Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur). HTF were very excited to get a sneaky preview into what the new album has to offer. Here is what we thought.
From the opening track ‘Mary’s Revenge’ and the second track ‘Health’, it is apparent that there are similarities to some highly influential bands such as Some Velvet Morning and even Band Of Horses (to an extent) in regards to their lyrical style and delivery. However, this is not to suggest that Funeral Suits do not have a signature style of their own. Because they do.
Skipping forward to the beautifully sombre track ‘We Only Attack Ourselves’; we have to admit this is where our love affair for this band really started. The track is honest and at times hard hitting for those who truly understand and feel the essence of it. The lyrical extract “How come the sun don’t shine on me” really says it all.
‘All Those Friendly People’, the band’s first single from the album, is definitely one of their stronger tracks. It’s more upbeat than perhaps some of the other tracks on the album and even though the narrative is about a love lost, it works well.
Overall the album is pretty damn good and HTF are definitely falling for these guys (and it’s not just because they are Irish). ‘Lily Of The Valley’ gets an 8/10 from us and our favourite track overall is definitely ‘We Only Attack Ourselves’ which gets a 10/10 easily. Nice work Funeral Suits.
