Band: Devil Sold His Soul
Release: A New Legacy (Single)
Release Date: 13/08/12
Texture is a wonderful thing. It’s so visceral and sensual that it enhances any kind of sensory experience. When a band’s sound is described as textured it usually means “dude that’s a whole lot of tracks in that pro tools session lolz”. But when it comes to Devil Sold His Soul it really does mean the previous idea.
Latest single ‘A New Legacy’ explores more melodic areas than ‘No Remorse, No Regrets’ but maintains that same sense of urgency and integrity. The mood shifts throughout the track from melancholic triumph to aggressive conviction, all thanks to the incredibly varied and emotive vocals of frontman Ed Gibbs. The chorus of the track is just begging to be bellowed back in the vocalist’s face by the crowd between the dynamic tides of the song’s structure.
Instrumentally the track sounds in equal parts lush and menacing. This time around the band’s production sounds more organic and deep like Converge or Poison the Well as opposed to the more polished and digitized ‘metal’ productions that seem to be making the rounds these days.
If the rest of ‘Empire of Light‘ is anything like these two tracks, it would seem safe to say Devil Sold His Soul may finally be sitting at the head of the musical empire they truly deserve.
9/10
