Rad band name, adroit record title, all we could hope for is that the ingenuity of all things descriptive match the content of the four-track record that has been causing quite a stir in recent weeks since its release a week into September (for free, yes…free).
Their self-coined genre of ‘Balls Out Pimp’ is immediate and striking when the opener ‘What Marv’ Said’ kicks in. Grooving, heavy yet still maintaining a huge amount of melody and clarity. Chick Rides Artist are a band with two vocalists, something that can often be a frankly pointless and debilitating move, but, in this case, the vocals of both Luca Berardino and Mark Lloyd are so different that the dimensions added to the tracks are endless. Simply f****** brilliant.
‘Livin’ La Vida Luca‘ is an aptly titled track. With the possibility of being false, there are definite Letlive. and Dance Gavin Dance influences throughout this track, mainly due to the vocal style and feel of the tracks overall. Having heard so many bands make attempts in this genre, you soon realise how difficult it is in order to pull of this kind of ‘post-hardcore/rock n’ roll’ sound. Chick Rides Artist have it down. Hard.
As the record passes the half-way point into the blisteringly upheaving ‘Lost In The Flex‘, a track that displays all things that make this band so unique. There’s heaviness, an abundance of melody, there’s blues and most importantly there is depth. Three quarters of the record has passed and it is apparent that there is absolutely nothing tiresome or drab about Chick Rides Artist so when the concluding banger ‘Southern Charms‘ kicks in, there is a revelation that there are hardly any other British bands dwelling in todays’ industry that sound anywhere near as interesting as Chick Rides Artist do.
If this band are anywhere near you on a tour or a one-off show or a festival, snort some sort of drug off a hookers tits, down a bottle of Jack and get loose because seriously, Chick Rides Artist are something else.
