American band Awolnation are building a name for themselves stateside after recently touring with MGMT and Weezer, and are keen to do the same this side of the pond. They’ve also picked up some famous fans along the way including Samantha Ronson and Innerpartysystem who have both remixed Awolnation tracks. Their debut EP Back From Future is released on November 8th.
What initially struck me about the EP is the sheer amount of stuff crammed into it; it is a mish mash of different genres and the only constant running throughout is lead singer Aaron Bruno’s deep, charismatic and charming voice. The EP takes you on an epic journey, and although it only includes four tracks after you’ve finished listening to Back From Future if feels as though you have listened to a complete album.
The first track Burn It Down is loud, proud and bolshie. Its high charged and energetic, and after a few listens I started to enjoy and appreciate it, I think it would be great live.
From the highly charged Burn It Down, next is something slightly mellower in the form of Sail. Sail is by far my favourite track on the EP, it’s the song I haven’t been able to get out of my head for the past few days. It’s beautiful and dark at the same time, I’m hooked.
As soon as I’d reached my melodic state with the atmospheric Sail it was over and I was thrown into the chaotic MF. MF aptly standing for Motherfucker is angry and messy with lines like ‘when I rock through the world with my dick in my hand.’ It just seems really passé; I get that’s it’s trying to be controversial but it’s just a bit out of date, it’s not fresh or exciting.
Guilty Filthy Soul is the fourth and final track, yet again it has a completely unique sound to any of the other tracks on the EP. The lyrics are catchy, upbeat and the music makes you want to tap your feet to the rhythm. It’s not offensive, it’s uplifting, something not found on the other tracks.
As the last track stops, I’m knackered it’s been a whirlwind of music, individually I liked all of the tracks but together as a complete EP I’m not so sure. Each song has a uniqueness that I enjoyed, Sail, Guilty Filthy Soul and even Burn It Down I could listen to again and again but for MF I don’t mind if it gets lost in my iTunes library.
