This is Anatomy of the Bear‘s debut full-length, and it is nothing less than absolutely beautiful. Anatomy of the Bear are Edward Gibbs (Devil Sold His Soul) and Ryan Westwood (ex-When Reason Sleeps) and their self-titled album is nothing like you might expect from their other heavier projects. In fact, this is probably the polar opposite of everything else they’ve done.
‘Anatomy of the Bear’ is over an hour of ambient, chilled out, blissful music. The majority of the record is instrumental, but the problem with the word ‘instrumental’ is that it makes it sound a little boring, and this is so far from boring it’s unreal. Tracks like ‘Stars Above The Cave’ and ‘Paw in Paw’ also feature Edward Gibbs’ angelic, soaring vocals. Complete and utter musical bliss.
The whole album has a completely epic sound, and every single song could easily be used for a movie soundtrack. In fact, if you listen to this while pondering life, it feels a little bit like you’re in your own movie. Try it with ‘Fireworks’. Seriously. Just a heads up.
If you’re looking for something heavy, then this won’t be for you. But if you’re open to hearing something different, something melodic and something that makes your heart feel like it might burst (in the best way possible), then you need to listen to Anatomy of the Bear. Listen out for them on movie soundtracks, because that is definitely where they’re headed. You never know, they might just change your life.
