When PVRIS first played in London only a couple of years ago, it was at the tiny, albeit sold-out, Barfly (now renamed as the Camden Assembly). This was, of course, something the lead singer Lynn Gunn touched on during their spectacular performance at the legendary O2 Academy Brixton on November 30. They’ve come a long way in a short amount of time, but with talent like that it hardly comes as a surprise.
Despite taking to the stage late, for reasons that remained a mystery, PVRIS were on top of their game from the very get-go. They powered through a killer set-list and the only true downfall was that it wasn’t longer, as the trio only played 13 songs in total. Kicking off with ‘Heaven‘, taken from the band’s second album All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell, they quickly lead in to fan favourite and hit single ‘St. Patrick‘, off of their debut White Noise. The crowd were loving every minute of it, despite being packed tightly into the Brixton’s very own death-trap ramp (you know the one we’re talking about…).

Treating fans to a mixed bag of both older material and new gems, it was evident that PVRIS had planned meticulously to make sure that their penultimate show for the year went off with a bang. Some of the more recent offerings, such as ‘Winter‘ and ‘Separate‘ did a fantastic job at diffusing the energy in the build-up before the final song of the main set, ‘My House‘. Usually reserved for the encore but now having been moved due to PVRIS’ new material, the audience went wild– something that was clearly appreciated by the trio, if their grins were anything to go by.
Returning to the stage for an encore of just one song, ‘No Mercy‘, it was heart-warming to see just how much PVRIS have evolved, and just how quickly they’ve been taken to by music fans. They’re one of the very few bands that can genuinely claim an intense level of depth; of real concern for their fans, noticeable in the details such as the Transgender Pride flag that Gunn draped proudly over one of the speakers mid-set. If you’re looking for a new favourite band, one that truly cares, this is the right place to look.
