No Consequence have been steadily making a name for themselves on the UK tech-metal circuit, and since the release of 2013’s IO on Basick Records and they are now enjoying a steady climb up the ladder of recognition. As a follow-up to IO, you could not really ask much more from Vimana. All of the ingredients that made IO such a spicy meatball (the downtuned Periphery-esque riffs, contrasted with the higher register technical fretwork, the stellar blend of clean and screamed vocals) are not only still present, but have been looked at, analysed, rebuilt, and improved.
Something No Consequence have shown they can do, and do to a more than admirable degree, is to make the sections where they are balls-to-the-wall chugging their hearts out still sound incredibly atmospheric. Sometimes you find that when heavy bands are playing as down-tuned as No Consequence seem to prefer, a lot of the minutia of their playing is lost, and the whole thing sounds like a drunk man farting into a traffic cone. No Consequence’s instrumental mix, combined with the subtle overlays that they sneak in mean that in songs like ‘Our Time Has Come‘ the breakdown sections feel much more expansive than your run-of-the-mill breakdowns.
There are not many excuses you could have that would allow you to not enjoy this album. The riffs are more than sublime and the vocal work is layered perfectly over them, enough to make pretty much any vocalist jealous. Even if there may be one aspect of Vimana that you don’t find yourself particularly enjoying, you will still find a plethora of other elements that will make you gurn with enjoyment.
There is also just something intrinsically like-able about No Consequence, and whatever it is, it does not just demand your attention for as long as it takes to listen to Vimana the whole way through multiple times – it captures it.
