Ska music might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but every once and a while a band will pop up and you’ll find yourself putting aside your musical preferences in order to appreciate that while their music isn’t the kind you’d usually listen to, they’re a damn good band. New Town Kings are sure to have that effect with their new EP Pull Up & Rewind, a collection of four incredible tracks that are guaranteed to brighten up even the dreariest of days.
The first offering is ‘Change‘, which is something refreshingly different theme-wise than bands usually right about. Instead of telling a tale of love and heartbreak, the track speaks of the world’s faults from poverty to war and everything in between. It’s a rather eye opening experience lyrically, and it definitely doesn’t hurt that it’s set to a catchy, sway-worthy piece of music. The band list some of their influences as The Specials and UB40, which is clear when listening to their music – they’ve taken some of the best aspects of older bands and thrown them in with their own ideas, which ultimately has New Town Kings delivering a mix of contemporary and classic in their spectacular tunes.
The record might be short, but it’s sweet, and there’s definitely no low points. Every track is solid on its own, showing off the band’s ability to be flexible with their performance. No two songs sound the same, which is a somewhat difficult task to pull off in such a specific genre – proving that New Town Kings are as versatile as they are talented. From the fast-paced and dance-y love song ‘Luna Rosa‘ to the slower, lazy day kind of soundtrack ‘Cool The Pressure Down‘, New Town Kings are sure to win you over.
