New Jersey post-punkers/ alternative rockers New Politicians were formed in late 2012 in a little community called Centerville. The band was initially formed by Gian Cortese on guitar, keyboards and vocals; and his brother Renal Anthony on vocals and guitar. With the addition of drummer Erik Watson and bassist Winston Mitlo, New Politicians has now completed their formation as a four piece. Following a self-produced EP in November 2013 that earned the band critical acclaim, the quartet has returned with a brand new EP under their belt titled Remission.
In terms of EPs, Remission is relatively long as it consists of seven tracks, and technically this could easily qualify as a mini-album. In these songs, expect to find the band experimenting with deep thumping rhythms, both clear ringing and reverb guitars, and subdued vocals. These tracks are not presented in any flashy manner, but rather a moody and mellow tone; as perfected by other bands in the so-called post-punk revival like The National and Interpol to name a couple.
‘Images’ is a great track guided by two swirling guitars that slowly builds up throughout its course like rising smoke. Another stand-out track is ‘Killer On The Mend’, immersing the listener with the cinematic feel as achieved by the echoes of dual guitars, radiant cymbals and floating vocals. With this EP, it is safe to say that New Politicians has created a dreamy, ambient record. Perhaps the strongest point of Remission is its great ability to create mood and atmosphere through its haunting and dark melodies.
