Five-piece The Mouth Of Ghosts, are a symphonic guitar band, led by an enchanting female vocal, making them comparable to the likes of Within Temptation.
The opening track on their ‘You Will Go Again From Me’ EP has a dark, bass-y, and, at times, synthesised sound, which is soon accompanied by a higher pitched keyboard riff. The contrast between these two sounds make for an epic opening song, as vocalist Alla Seydalieva demonstrates the impressive range her voice can reach. It is clear that a lot of production and thought has gone into this track.
‘Winter Song’, the second track has a more ethereal sound, displaying the higher tones of the frontwoman’s vocal against a soft backing track. While this song is calmer than the first it doesn’t make it any less impressive, the only problem being, it can get lost among other bands with operatic-type vocals, such as Nightwish.
Next song ‘Right On Time’ breaks this, however, standing out from the others. The opening consists of vocals and a piano. When the rest of the track kicks in, the drums and bass create a burlesque sounding rhythm, which wouldn’t sound out of place in the musical Chicago. The vocals aren’t quite that gritty, though, remaining smooth and clean, but hitting some lower notes than before adding to the darkness, and almost sexy nature of the track.
Closing track ‘You Will Go’ returns to the enchanting sounds heard in ‘Winter Song’. There is a repetitive piano progression at the beginning which continues throughout the song. Other instruments join in a minute into the song, but still create the illusion of simplicity you would expect from minimal instrumentation.
At a time when female vocalists are becoming increasingly popular, The Mouth Of Ghosts are bound to find their place in the music scene with four songs as strong as these, despite the similarity to many pre-existing bands.
