Midday Committee are a four-piece rock band from Plymouth who are now on their third release, the 7-track EP ‘Girls In Open C’, and are sticking to their pop-punk sound in the vein of Kids In Glass Houses and Verses. Both of which they have toured with.
The opening track is a 15 second ‘Intro’ that transitions so perfectly into the next track you do have to wonder why it has a separate place on the record; it could easily have just been a part of the first song. The vocals immediately have a gritty punk sound to them, comparable to Jeremy McKinnon from A Day To Remember and instantly sets the tone for the rest of the album. ‘Maybe I Should’, is very similar to the first song, with traditional pop-punk, unclean guitar tracks and very similar tempos while fourth track, ‘Casino’, takes a slightly slower, more melodic approach.
‘Hometowns’ changes pace again, kicking off with just drums before Don Broco-esque guitars kick-in and the whole song then follows in this vein, with a catchy beat I can imagine that would work great in a live set-up to get a crowd dancing.
The penultimate track’s bridge holds similarities to ‘Stacey’s Mom’ and is a great pop-punk track. This is the fastest and most punk song on the mini-album and therefore making this the best example of what Midday Committee are all about.
Things slow down for the final track that begins with an acoustic guitar, and features the female vocals of Christina Rotondo who’s voice sounds like a beautiful cross between Jenna McDougall from Tonight Alive and the ex-vocalist of Flyleaf, Lacey Sturm. It’s a great way to end the EP letting you calm down from the upbeat punk of the other songs.
Everything on this EP has a slightly different sound to it from full on pop-punk, to slow and melodic. It demonstrates all different sides of the band and is a great way for them to showcase all of their talents.
