The first night of any tour is always an exciting time, even more so when you’re two of the biggest boy bands from the last 10 years teaming up to make childhood dreams come true.

As the lights dim, The Hyrdo instantly turns back time to 2001. A Back To The Future inspired video shows Busted members Matt Willis and James Bourne dressed as their old selves. In true McBusted style, the pair appear on stage in their very own Delorean. As they land, McFly burst onto stage with huge bang before the super group head straight into their first throwback of the night – ‘Air Hostess’.

From ‘Britney’ to ‘What I Go To School For’ and ‘Crashed The Wedding’; with every Busted song that’s performed the crowd can be heard cheering so loudly as they watch a vision which they never thought would be seen again. A particular highlight comes as they perform ‘Sleeping with the Light On’, giving the group a chance to show off just how on point their harmonies are. As the entire audience sing back the lyrics word for word and wave their phone lights in the air it creates a really special moment. The overwhelming grin on Willis’ face is enough to pinpoint almost exactly the moment at which the scale of this whole tour began to sink in. A very touching moment.

Not forgetting about the other four members of the supergroup, the band perform some McFly classics too. Well known singles such as ‘5 Colours In Her Hair’ and ‘Obviously’ are given a new sense of energy thanks to the two extra members, giving them all the opportunity to run around the stage and really make the most of this exciting band dynamic.

The futuristic theme of the show is taken extremely literally half way through as the group appear on a giant floating UFO in the middle of the arena to perform appropriately named ‘Star Girl’, ‘Nerdy’ and ‘Room On The Third Floor’, before shooting back to the main stage to continue their trip through space with ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’. There’s even time to squeeze in a cover of MJ’s ‘I Want You Back’, complete with seamless dance moves.

Aside from the huge amounts of pure energy and fun that the McBusted Tour 2014 brings, the show really highlights just how many exceptional pop songs these six boys (or is it men now?) have created between them. Their adoring audience, still going strong even after 12 years, proves that no one is ever too old for pop music. As the last notes of ‘Year 3000’ echo around the arena during their encore, each member disappears one by one and the audience is plummeted back into 2014.

With shows planned up and down the UK until the end of summer this super group show no signs of slowing down any time soon. Long may it continue.
