The Pepperoni Playboy himself has returned with his forthcoming mini-LP, Another One, set for release on August 7 via Captured Tracks. The Canadian born slacker rocker produced this mini-LP in his New York apartment between tour dates promoting Salad Days, his previous studio album.
The sun-sparkles and this light-hearted mini-LP is familiar territory for Mac DeMarco fans with no lack of playful guitars or deadpan vocals. A sunny gloss glazes over the tracks making it the perfect album for those lazy summer days. It almost seems as thought the songs follow a slow winding river, one track winding in to the next one in an easy and fluid manner.
Another One opens with ‘The Way You’d Love Her’ and smooths into the title track contemplating “must be another one she loves.” The album explores themes of the blissful feeling of falling in love to the subtle anxieties of being in love or being heartbroken. ‘A Heart Like Hers’ expresses a lost love through a yearning guitar melody and the sombre chant, “never believe in heart like hers again.” The album picks up speed with the upbeat, glam-pop track, ‘I’ve Been Waiting for Her’.
Another One comes to a close with an instrumental lullaby played over a recording of beach sounds from near his Brooklyn home. Being the neighbourly Canadian he is, Mac DeMarco ends the mini album giving away his address and inviting you to “stop on by” for a cup of coffee.
Mac DeMarco never fails to release music where you can close your eyes, wear a smile and effortlessly sway. His nonchalant stoner vibe music has no need for elaboration and you will simply feel content after a good listen. If you haven’t fallen in love with this alt-rock oddball, you will after this mini album.
