LTNT have been feeling the buzz since the release of their debut EP, DAO, and have since been invited to tour with the likes of Chevelle and Seether, as well as landing spots at Reading and Leeds Festival. Now the band are taking the next step with their debut album RANK, which was released on March 11th via Maybe Records.
RANK is chaotic, loud and possesses a pretty full on punk rock attitude. It’s full of raw energy throughout as displayed in the albums lead single ‘Boss Lady’. Fuzzy, crunching guitars and a heart-thumping rhythm, the track also displays what Liam Lever on vocals can do; a very ‘Rock’ voice but with an ability to smooth out for melodic choruses as well as more shouty styles and even dabbling into some falsetto.
The band have a very set style: Heavy riffing, heavy pumping rhythms, and powerful rock vocals. ‘Oh Drag’ has an infectious pulsating riff and we like how angry it gets without taking things too far. The energy is present throughout the album with ‘The Sleeper Wakes’ being one of our favourite tracks.
It’s all just a bit chaotic at times and we like that; there’s a sense of attitude and a bit of bite, which is what a band of this style really needs. The issue though is when the band try to dabble away from this style as when LTNT have ventured away from it briefly, such as during ‘Hole In My Heart’, they haven’t managed to pull it off. As a result, the combination of things sounding a bit samey or unoriginal at times and the slower tracks cause the album to drag on a little bit as a whole.
Don’t get us wrong though, there are some very strong tracks on this album. ‘Meat Market’, for example, is something the band should look into more. Coming away from the heavy crunch guitars and letting the bass lead the rhythm while the guitar takes the cool melodies/harmonies, really works well and is a nice change from what the rest of the album offers.
It’s just, as a whole, we think the album is lacking a bit of creativity and originality. It’s not that the tracks are poor. Not at all. As already stated, there are some really cool tracks featured here. It’s just that nothing really stands out at us. There’s just not enough here that think is ‘special’.
