Live Review : Chas & Dave – Margate Winter Gardens – 10/05/13

Margate bids farewell (for definite this time) to the best songwriting duo in Britain today.

Band: Chas & Dave
Venue : Margate Winter Gardens
Date : 10/05/13

For two old boys that have been actively involved in the music industry all their lives, Chas & Dave sure do show absolutely no signs of slowing down.

Even if this actually is their final (absolutely, legitimately, definitively this time) farewell tour. But tonight, they stop off at their favourite seaside town of Margate, to bid one final farewell.

It is impressive to think that Chas & Dave had to be forced out of retirement because of the phenomenal public demand to have them play in their town. Personally speaking, I do not think that the pair of them even know just how loved they are by the public, and are regarded as a British institution to which we hold very dear to our hearts.

Tonight, Chas & Dave play every single song you could ever imagine from their back catalogue. Even the infamous ‘The Bollocks Song’ got a cheeky play tonight as well, even though they never officially recorded that on album. But it is with such absolutely cracking singalong tracks such as ‘Gertcha’, The Sideboard Song’, ‘Rabbit’, ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’ and ‘London Girls’, that you realize that how much their back catalogue is just absolutely timeless. Classic songwriting that still stands the test of time, and has outdated every single sub-genre and cultural phase that has ever been. It is almost like these guys have a resistance to cultural change, and that society works its way around them instead.

The crowd tonight are on top form as well, and are singing along to every single word that is being sang. But it is when Chas & Dave play the homecoming song ‘Margate’ that everyone decides to start getting up out of their seats and dancing around the place just having a bloody good laugh and just adhering to the natural golden rules that are expected at a Chas & Dave show… have a pint in one hand, make sure your vocal chords are ready for a good singalong, and to just have a terrific time.

Tonight you see why exactly why these guys are so loved by their adoring public. They are living proof that you do NOT need no fancy mumbo jumbo to make your band interesting. Keep it sweet, simple, fun, relatable, and straight to the point and you have an arsenal of songs that people will be singing for many, many years to come. It was an absolute pleasure to witness the sheer awesomeness of one of Britain’s best loved musical acts.

Score : 9/10
