Band: Canterbury
Support: Mallory Knox, Scholars and The Deering
Venue: White Rabbit, Plymouth
Date: 29/11/12
So often now is Plymouth’s White Rabbit getting a cracking show and tonight’s line up was about to arguably top the list for 2012 for many. First support came from Plymouth’s own The Deering, fronted by videographer extraordinaire himself Daniel Broadley. After not hearing much from this bunch for a while it was clear to see a mass improvement, their tightness and likability is still there with force and the room was already pretty busy, a welcomed surprise. It would seem we were not the only ones who knew The Deering were about to kick ass! 8/10
Next up were Hemel Hempstead nutters Scholars, a band who have always been under our radar. They are so great live you struggle to understand why they are not bigger than they are. Their tightness and song writing has always been top notch and their set list tonight proves that. They play old school classics like ‘Wreck’ along with current single smash ‘Blinda Data’, with almost every track going down as great as the next. These guys always bring something special to their performance so we really hope the new year brings great things for them, they are one of those bands who honestly deserve it.
Then those beloved Cambridge lads Mallory Knox took to the stage; it has been a year since these guys played Plymouth and what a difference a year can make. No longer are they those innocent young rockers they once were, they smash out all their belting new singles, along with classics from their debut EP with ease. With their new album ‘Signals’ seeing release in the new year we predict 2013 to be the year for this five piece. Their song writing skills and live performances are completely flawless, we honestly always struggle to ever pick fault with their set. Mallory Knox were quite definitely a perfectly hand picked support band for those Surrey lads in Canterbury. Belting! 9/10
Canterbury are another band that we want to literally shake in the faces of the British public. Both albums that these lads had made are great so why have they not yet broke through to where they should be in their career? Bands like We Are The Ocean, Youmeatsix and the like havie constant Radio 1 play and support from the big names so why not these guys?
Their set tonight was picked perfectly but to be honest we could of happily watched them perform their entire discography from beginning to end. These guys are very much an album band and perhaps that is why they are yet to break through the thresh hold of the industry, they certainly have the material so why are they not completely massive is beyond us! We blame Britain, we sometimes struggle with knowing how great things are even if they are dangled in front of our faces.
‘Peace And Quiet’ and ‘Ambulance’ are our favourites performed from their debut ‘Thank You’, with ‘Ready Yet?’, ‘Wrapped In Rainbows’ and ‘Gloria’ being our favourites performed from their latest offering ‘Heavy In The Day’. The whole venue was buzzing and for the bands first outing to Plymouth they had a pretty impressive crowd in front of them. We hope this is not their last visit down South but in a way we kind of do. We want to see them headlining massive venues because we believe that is the potential they have as a band. Let us all hope 2013 brings another great British band the success they clearly deserve. 9/10
