Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is your average punk band. One part Italian and three parts pizza fanatical, Ligaments are sliced delights of punk crust, stuffed with as much rapid drum beats as you could order. Pizza references aside, this London hailed trio are about to unleash their EP Eat Pizza next month, and although every copy doesn’t come with free mozzarella sticks (sorry folks!), it does come with ounces of stripped back rock n’ roll to its very core.
Opener ‘Precinct 13’ torpedoes in with all your expected punk traits; boisterous drum beats, raspy vocals and a laid back ethos. Whilst its refreshing to hear an EP that opens with such a care-free nature, there is a feeling that its gone one step too far in some instances. The production is uncomplicated and oozes natural flair, at the cost of a sense of a reserved nature occasionally.
Whilst second track ‘4th’ similarly follows suit, the latter of the EP does provide accomplished attempts to provide a few quirky side dishes to a one flavour piece of work. ‘The Black Lodge’ is gritty in all the right places and has vocality that sounds at its strongest. With punk as stripped back as this, its hard to pack in unique touches. This track certainly nails it on the head as it teases you with its changes in tempo.
To sum it up then? Eat Pizza is a satisfying piece of work if you’re looking for The Bronx a la London. What is hard to get past though is that it could have gone further with a bit of upped anti in its production and the dare to add more quirks. It can’t be denied however that if you’re a fan of back-to-basics rock n’ roll, then this will certainly tickle your tastebuds.
