Alternative rock quintet Future Talk are about to release their debut EP The Path That Sadness Paved. Now, the band haven’t been around for too long – they only formed in 2014 – but according to guitarist Jay McQuilkin they all have an “insatiable desire to create music”, and heck, that’s good enough for us!
When we hear the words “debut EP” we either think, “this is going to foreshadow mediocrity and generic crap to come”, or “the production is going to be so terrible that it’s unlistenable”. Well, thankfully, this EP is neither.
Future Talk already have a solid, catchy sound, and a style that’s unique, carefully thought out and memorable. Think British alt rock, meets American post-hardcore—minus the unclean vocals. It’s pretty special.
Previously released ‘Sleeping Pills’ is a bold, guitar driven melody. It actually sounds like a wild combination of Mallory Knox and Chiodos. The delicate, yet commanding vocals from singer Alex Taylor, give the song a layer of depth that can almost give you goose bumps.
‘Shadow Poet’ is a much slower, emotional track, which contains these same mighty vocals. However, Alex Taylor’s voice sounds a lot more Jonny Craig-esque this time. The song plays around with light and dark tones, making it that much more magnetic.
The beautiful and expressive ‘The Cliffs As A Reminder’ and ‘Fear Life’ highlight just versatile the band is. They manage to get their emotive message across, without slowing down the track to the point of an acoustic ballad. Their mighty melodies are the multifaceted backdrops to their poignant lyrics.
This EP is filled with beautiful, soothing vocals, punchy melodies, and a powerful, emotional force driving through the whole thing. Future Talk are definitely the ones to watch.
