Stomping out of the Hertfordshire area, Faces Of Eve have already gained a sizeable following with their new prog/tech stylings. Although fans of the Rush style of prog may find that prog metal has apparently, erm, progressed, and with Faces Of Eve that means absorbing all manner of influences from other areas of heavy music.
In every way this album is technically as solid as can be. The riffs vary between the drop-tuned chug that has become as much a staple component in this kind of music as the blisteringly fast and technical fretwork that one would expect. For the most part though the work on The Story So Far seems to favour the former the two, allowing the low-register heaviness and superb guitar tone to blend together to create something that feels like you’re being kicked right in the chest, and forces you to love every second of it.
Occasionally in heavy metal it can feel a bit like screaming is thrown in purely for the sake of it; “We’re a modern metal band! We need screaming!” This is where the prog side of Faces Of Eve comes through to save the day. There isn’t any screaming, but there absolutely doesn’t need to be. Songs like ‘Feed‘ have such strong vocals, especially when it comes to the high-register singing, that to have replaced them with anything else would have negatively impacted the whole album.
As a standalone EP, this is nothing short of pure class; as a debut EP, and a message that the best is yet to come, both the record and Faces Of Eve themselves suddenly become one of the most interesting young bands to be springing up right about now.
