Lesson Learnt is the second EP from Berkshire alt-rock quintet Elasea. Despite only forming a few years ago Elasea have already attracted a growing fanbase by touring with bands such as Funeral for a Friend and Allusondrugs. Since their 2015 debut release Where I Belong, they’ve enhanced their sound by adding keyboards and synths into the mix, giving this new record a more atmospheric touch than their previous work.
The latest single ‘Breathe’ kicks off the EP, with soaring choruses featuring alternating vocals from guitarist Andy Bradford and bassist Liv Jones. The two singers mesh together well, harmonising excellently and providing a nice depth to the melodic side of Elasea’s music. There’s more than just sweet melodies and singalongs on offer here though, as the songs ‘Time Stops’ and ‘On My Own’ introduce some satisfyingly heavy riffage into the fray, as well as the occasional screamed vocals for good measure.
The closing track, ‘Walls’ takes things to an even more anthemic level, showing off Elasea’s ability to craft massive choruses, before wrapping up proceedings with a majestic guitar solo from lead guitarist Calum Radmore. While every song on the EP has a distinctive sound and identity, something they all have in common is a good old catchy hook, granting them an accessible yet impressive sound.
The EP is short and sweet, consisting of just four main tracks and and a relaxing interlude, but it’s enough to make anyone excited about the future of this band. The adept songwriting and punchy, layered music that Elasea demonstrate on Lesson Learnt is the kind of stuff future legends are made of.
