Drifter has been around the grime scene for many years, kicking off in 2006 with South London Grime collective Grimey Cadets, sets on Rinse FM with some of the UKs legendary Urban stars and more recently that “SB.TV Warm Up Session“.
With the buzz surronding his Warm Up Session it’s surely the right time to release a mixtape, and is if some fairy dusted magic over our inboxes in came the preview copy of ‘Catch My Drift‘ his forthcoming mixtape, due out on July 16th.
The mixtape features 12 tracks with artists such as Pacman, P Money & Little Dee blessing it and Faze Miyake, Rude Kid and Dot Rotten producing the kind of beats that are just meant to be #Murked (Jme Murking Voice).
It all kicks off with ‘New Beginnings‘ a track that signifies a new start for Drifter with lines such as “started on a new path, it’s a old one” you just know that he has had to work hard to get here. Interestingly Drifter can also hold a note and sings well on the hook. Imagine if Grime had a Drake, yeah!
My early favourite has to be ‘Done For The Scene‘ which has a Dizzee Rascal sound, you could have dropped this back when Grime was born and this would not sound out of place. I am just trying to imagine what this would do in a club, when I say prepare for a madness, then you actually need to prepare. Whilst Skitz and A2 add to it nicely, I can’t wait to see whether we’ll see an allstar remix.
Overall this a strong mixtape from Drifter and one that will be well placed in any Grime fans iPod collection.
Expect to not let go when you’ve caught the drift on July 16th.
