David Guetta – Camden Roundhouse – 03/09/14|Live Review

As the second highest paid DJ in the world took to the stage at the iTunes Festival, would he live up to his reputation?

With tonight’s show being part of the iTunes Festival the crowd seemed s slightly different bunch to a normal David Guetta show. The crowd of 17- somethings, who it seems go to a gig just to watch it through the screen of their iPhone in an attempt to hold on to memories of the show they are essentially missing, were very hard to get moving and involved in the show; probably because Instagram couldn’t wait. So on this note, Clean Bandit and David Guetta did a great job in getting any kind of response tonight.

Luckily, Clean Bandit didn’t disappoint and went above expectations performing incredibly on stage. Set highlight was by-far their cover of Robin S’ ‘Show Me Love’ sending the crowd crazy. Finishing with their huge hit ‘Rather Be’, it had the crowd finally involved and singing along and was a great finish to an awesome set.

David Guetta has produced some great tracks in the past, especially from 2002-2004 and even in to the ‘One Love’ album in 2009. However, his more recent work seem to be written more to generate money than with any thought into actually making good electronic music. Despite this, he’s obviously doing something right; as being the second highest earning DJ last year shows. Trying to drop some of his earlier tracks in to the set, “ Let’s see if you remember this one!” seemed to fall a bit flat;  they didn’t. The whole feel and vibe seemed lost in the great, but fairly small venue of Camden Roundhouse. In a festival environment this could have been incredible.

Comparing his older material to his newer releases, they seemed very ‘samey’. There was no complexity to the show and, although it was kind of what the crowd wanted and responded to, it seemed a bit painful. Negatives aside, he played his two hours well and the crowd went away happy. I think we just expected a little more from the second highest paid DJ in the world right now.
