At times like this, when things go a little stale – like when you leave a sandwich out just a few minutes too long before eating it – we love bands who come along ready to shake things up. We should be thrilled, then, at the release of debut three-track EP Come Get Some from raring-to-go London punks Counterfeit.
The EP opens with the band’s debut single and, until now, the only material we’ve had to base our opinion of Counterfeit upon. Thankfully, ‘Come Get Some’ is a killer and has garnered wave after wave of positive praise and, after a couple of listens, it’s clear to see why – their raw brutality is rejuvenating, with punchy Brit-punk vocals and exquisite use of ‘90s grunge lo-fi distortion creating something with serious bite.
We then move onto the darker, alternative ‘Hold Fire’, which exposes even more of this band’s grunge side. It’s gritty, angsty and downright dirty, with so much aggression that you should steer clear of this track if you’re in a bad mood or you might find yourself turning green and bursting out of your clothes, Hulk-style. Despite the attitude, ‘Hold Fire’ has a great punk groove in the chorus reminiscent of something from Rage Against the Machine.
‘Family Suicide’, the EP’s final track, has a vein of bold masculinity running right through it. It’s everything you would want from a hard-hitting punk track – it’s rough, violent, gusty and, above all, real. The track reaches boiling point during its quiet breakdown, a moment so tense it makes you feel like the one on edge! This final note of the record makes you feel like you’re just on the cusp of a major explosion – and we can only hope that comes with the next release!
Don’t let us down, Counterfeit.
