Having only been a band for two years, Liverpool foursome Circa Waves have already gained admirers in the likes of Zane Lowe, Radio 1 and NME with an ever growing fan base. If you’re still wondering what all the fuss is about, their debut album Young Chasers is here to show you.
Aptly, the album begins with the band’s debut single ‘Get Away’ and shoots straight into fast, energetic guitars that instantly grab your attention. Big, uplifting choruses with brilliant sing-alongs are a constant theme throughout this record. The songs are instantly likeable and it feels like you already know them even after one listen thanks to the unbelievably catchy riffs.
In fact, there are so many stand out tracks that it’s hard to choose a few highlights. ‘Best Years’, ‘Stuck In My Teeth’, ‘Fossils’ and current single ‘T-Shirt Weather’ feel like proper summer songs with simple but brilliant lyrics such as “I’m a little too young with not enough time”. Every song has a different but equally as loveable riff to hook you in, with Kieran Shudall’s authentic vocals providing further realism. Title track ‘Young Chasers’ perfectly encapsulates the album’s exciting sound from the point of view of four normal young lads.
There are some slower songs on the album such as ‘Deserve This’, but while they are still good, they don’t create the same amount of ‘oomph’ as the upbeat tracks, becoming slightly lost in between them. High energy tunes are most certainly the band’s forte and luckily there are plenty of them.
Circa Waves’ musical style is reminiscent of The Futureheads-type era of indie music from 2005 but with a fresh vibe. There was a time not long ago when there seemed to be a distinct lack of this type of band but they’ve helped bring it back into 2015 and make it feel relevant again. With 19 songs on the deluxe version and none of them over three and a half minutes long, this record boasts a welcome balance of both quantity and quality.
Having seen their brilliant live set at Reading Festival last year it’s easy to see how this record will transfer to the stage to create spirited shows full of energy. Pick up this album and then book yourself a ticket; you definitely won’t be left disappointed.
