With the release of Love Is Not Enough we witnessed the breakout of Casey, and since some coveted tours including a slot at Download Festival 2017, this year sees the band on their well deserved rise. The Welsh quintet are fresh off the back of releasing their new full-length Where I Go When I Am Sleeping, and following a string of European dates are now amidst their UK run supporting their new release.
Several shows on the tour are sold out, including the band’s gig at London’s Boston Music Rooms, which is a contrast to the band’s last headline in the capital, where they played to 60 odd people. The band kicked off their set with the heartbreaking opener of their new album ‘Making Weight’, an emotive look into vocalist Tom Weaver’s experience with depression, a theme that makes up most of the tracks on the band’s recent release.
What comes as a surprise is the fact that the evening’s set wasn’t quite as heavy with Casey’s new tracks as you would expect, perhaps it’s the fact that it’s been just a few weeks since its release. Although when it did make an appearance, the crowd seem to be no strangers to the album. Especially recent singles ‘Phosphenes’ and ‘Fluorescents’ were received with passionate sing alongs.
Clocking in at just under an hour, the audience were also treated to some older gems including ‘Hell’, ‘Teeth’ and evident fan favourite ‘Darling’. Ending the set with ’Little Bird’, it was clear the crowd weren’t quite satisfied yet, calling out for more. Now, in this day and age encores have somehow become the norm and it’s rare for bands to not come out for one (or sometimes more) extra song. Yet when Casey walked out back out on stage, asking the crowd what song they wanted to hear, it felt a bit more genuine than encores we’ve become accustomed to.
The band’s mixture of emo, spoken word and post-hardcore is a welcome breath of fresh air in a growingly saturated music scene. Their tracks are so visceral and honest that sometimes it becomes painful to listen to, and the emotiveness of it is heightened in a live setting. The band have been on a quick ascend in the past few years and there’s no sign of it slowing down any time soon – there is no doubt that more sold out shows are on the horizon for Casey.
