Rockers Calling All Heroes definitely seem to take influence from fellow Welsh bands The Blackout and Kids In Glass Houses, as they bring a flair of theatrical brilliance in to settle with their killer riffs and intelligent lyrics. Their debut EP Origins was released earlier this month, and despite only boasting four songs, it’s enough to give listeners an idea of just how determined a band these guys are.
Origins‘ first single ‘The Boys and Girls of Misery‘ is huge, and for that very reason it’s pretty obvious as to why it was chosen as the lead single. Along the same lines as The Blackout’s ‘Children of the Night‘, the song is incredibly energetic, blending clean vocals and melodies with screamo and thrash. It’s not a track to lull you to sleep, but listeners will certainly have a great time rocking out to it!
The production behind this record isn’t great, but it’s forgivable thanks to all the heart and soul that Calling All Heroes put in to their performance. For a first attempt at an EP it’s on the better side of the scale, as the quintet offer up songs like ‘I Bet On You, Jack‘, and ‘The Revolution‘ which has vocalist Bethan Mary Williams channelling the standards of Tonight Alive‘s Jenna McDougall – but better, because she’s British!
As the alt rockers power through this short EP they’re likely to win you over whether you’re on their side from the start or not, and we can only hope that with this incredible start they get better each and every time they work on new music. The Welsh music scene has taken a hit recently with the unfortunate split of Kids In Glass Houses, but these guys are definitely capable of staging a revival!
