Blood Youth in reality are a re-envisioning of a previous band from members Sam Bowden (guitar), Chris Pritchard (guitar), Max Dawson (Bass), Patt Mowles (drums), who, with new vocalist Kaya Tarsus, are about to take the music industry by story. First off though, the band need material, and their brand new EP, Inside My Head, is set to prove that they’re more than capable of making a mark for themselves.
Outside of their music, the band are really taking on a faux 80s vibe, which interestingly coincides with one of the greatest videos the internet has seen in recent times, Kung Fury, if you haven’t seen it seriously do. Once you’ve done that, bring yourself back and listen to Inside My Head, and the pure batshit craziness of the video will suit the brutality and pure cacophony of sound the EP produces. Let’s put it this way, the band describes their sound as “Triple Dragon” if that doesn’t scream neon-80s we don’t know what does.
Looking at the tracks themselves, at the very basis of everything, it is a pretty post-hardcore mix, but even within the melodic parts of each song there is a hint of aggression, just sitting on the surface. What you’re getting for your money here are 5 tracks being thrown at you at breakneck speed, with drum beats going off right left and centre, guitar tones are ever present and the vocals tie everything together. Up to this point the band have released two tracks so far, ‘Cold Sweat, and ‘Failure’, and in reality they are the best two on offer. Not to take away from the other tracks, ‘Big Smoke’, is a more melodic wind down, whereas the other two, ‘Piece by Piece’, and ‘Dead Space’, are certainly leaning more on the aggressive sound. These tracks are still pretty good in the grand scheme of things, but just fall a little flat to the heights of the aforementioned tracks.
You have to bear in mind that this is the first release Blood Youth have released, and more will come as they evolve and learn. Inside My Head is the perfect doorway for the band to move forwards and create bigger moments for themselves. With the likes of a UK tour with Trash Boat and Download, and Hevy Festival respectively coming up, you will certainly be seeing a lot more of Blood Youth. With some of the best artwork we’ve seen recently, Blood Youth have unleashed their inner dragon souls to rip a gateway to better things.
