Hailing from Exeter, Black Foxxes are a band we have been keeping our eyes on, especially in the past few months. So when the band recently played to a sold out Boston Music Room, we leapt at the opportunity to go and catch them. Having only released their terrific debut album I’m Not Well a couple of months ago, playing to multiple sold out crowds so shortly after is quite an achievement. But anyone who has listened to the album, or seen the band live will realise that this achievement is absolutely warranted.
With an album title like I’m Not Well, it’s quite easy to decipher that the content of the record is in many ways gloomy, melancholic and definitely not for the faint hearted. Drawing from frontman Mark Holley‘s own experiences with Chron’s disease and anxiety, lyrics are often drenched in feelings of pain. However, more often than not there’s something very encouraging about hearing musicians tackle subjects that so many people can relate to. So while these are the lyrics that make your heart sink a little because “the feels are real”, but in breaking the stigma about mental health there comes the sense of encouragement of making it out the other side.
The Exeter trio’s debut album may draw you in for a listen but hearing these songs in a live setting is an absolute must. Though far from perfect, this is the kind of band who play with such genuineness and their hearts on their sleeves that even a performance that is less than perfect is more than enough. Black Foxxes are a terrific band on the rise and with the momentum they are building up at the moment, who knows where they’ll be this time next year. It’s time you got acquainted.
