Infectious groove and heavy riffs hit you within the first few minutes of Selfish Scars, the new EP from Bristol based post-hardcore band Beyond Recall. The compelling sophomore EP indulges itself in catchy hooks and lyrical honesty. Their use of pop punk vocals combined with heavier vibes reminds us of bands like A Skylit Drive, Our Last Night and All Time Low. With a growing reputation and fan base behind them, did the EP impress us?
Crunching riffs grab your attention as ‘140 Characters’ storms in. The chorus and accompanying riffs are catchy and keep the atmosphere upbeat. Tapping introduces ‘Get it Right’ a track which utilizes catchy guitar riffs. Like the rest of the tracks on the EP, it’s irritatingly addictive and is bound to get stuck in your head.
‘Almost’ is another riff heavy hit for the EP. The track begins with an answer phone message and follows with Zaid Elgahmi’s rap vocals. Although the chorus is catchy, it starts to become slightly repetitive. There’s no doubt though that this is one crowds will sing back by heart.
Selfish Scars is definitely a more mature release than Beyond Recall’s previous The Mixtape EP. It’s a hard-hitting release, exploring the idea of feeling guilt. Instead of attempting to cover up wrongdoings, Beyond Recall are deciding to take responsibility for the things in their lives.
