Seattle alt-rockers Awaken The Empire were first thrust into the spotlight back in 2012, after their music video for ‘Rise and Fall’ blew up on MTV.com, beating the likes of pop icons Justin Bieber and Rihanna to the number 1 spot on MTV’s music video charts. Three years later in 2015, the quartet consisting of Damien Lawson (vocals, guitar), Shivan Somaratne (guitar), Romina Fronti (bass) and Daryl Falconer (drums) release their long-awaited debut album Aurora – but is it worth the wait?
The answer to that is a resounding “Hell yes!” Aurora is a masterclass in spectacular songwriting. Combining pop melodies with gritty alternative rock grooves, judiciously positioned electronic nuances and subtle orchestral elements, the album is an atmospheric, intriguing piece of work laden with raw emotion.
It’s difficult to pick out just a few highlights from this album as pretty much every song could be used as a single. Opening track ‘Insomniacs Unite’ is an anthemic alt-rock stomper, building up from its ethereal intro and unleashing into a huge, energetic chorus. Damien Lawson’s vocals are stunningly emotive and powerful, and you really feel that he means every lyric he sings. ‘Cruel World’ is reminiscent of Linkin Park and is another emotionally-charged track with a catchy chorus, whilst ‘We Control The Lights’ gets you moving with its slick beats, groovy baselines and Muse-esque vocal harmonies.
Recent single ‘Cross My Heart’ is one of the heavier moments on the album, with Enter Shikari–style synths and crushing guitars, contrasting with heartfelt pop-punk ballad ‘Messy’. ‘A Tribute to Rome’ is different yet again, being more beats and synth-driven, not dissimilar to Depeche Mode. Fans of 30 Seconds To Mars will also find lots to enjoy on this album, with its mix of synth rock, metal and killer choruses.
Minor criticisms to point out are that some of the electronics border on being cheesy, and the production is a little bass heavy in places, however this doesn’t detract from how utterly phenomenal this album is.
‘Aurora’ is an impressive debut, with there being more to discover with each listen. This is a band without gimmicks or any trace of facade; Awaken The Empire are all about the music, which makes them all the more refreshing. Expect them to be filling larger venues and being placed higher on festival bills in the months to come – definitely ones to watch.
