From The Ashes are a hard rock band hailing from London. Quoting their influences as a vast range of genres like blues, heavy rock, grunge and country; the four-piece bring all of this together to create a sound of their own. Frequent London gig goers may be familiar with the band, who have been busy playing a bunch of local shows. In late November, From The Ashes released their latest EP, titled No Lost Ground.

Three tracks long, the EP kicks in with ‘Wolf In The Fold’. This being our very first encounter with From The Ashes, it becomes clear to us quite early on that there is a certain old school quality about the band’s sound. Most of the time, the chorus of a track serves as the highlight of a track, but with this one we’re more drawn to the highly guitar driven verses.

Track two is ‘Fool’s Chain’, which follows suit in the moderate energy of the opening track. This song feels like it was written for the purpose of being performed live. Between the gang-vocals of the chorus and the guitar solo, we envision it being played in a dimly lit venue. Last but not least is ‘Hot Pursuit’ which is arguably the most exciting track on the release. It’s pacey and evidently heavier than the previous two tracks. Despite being an English band, there’s a slight American folk twang that comes out in this track’s vocals.

Albeit being a pretty good listen, we can’t help but feel as if there’s something missing. No Lost Ground is lacking that extra oomph that makes a release remarkable.
