‘Derangeable‘ – definitely one way to describe Aliases, which is also the title of their latest album. Derangeable by name and by nature, the amount of creative genius this band posses’ is close to insane with just the guitar riffs alone. Furiously driving modern metal into a whole new atmosphere, Aliases bring mature but fun material in a very technically demanding way with great energy. This energy is carried across brilliantly by the new frontman Joe Rosser with his strong, scratchy and versatile voice, supported with great ferocity and power from the new drummer Jof Walsh.
You can not deny the musicianship that these guys have, having formed in 2010 and releasing a single and an album before Derangeable, Aliases have had the chance to hone their skills and find their sound; which is fast, chilling and down right mind-blowing. No mercy is taken, even right from the beginning. ‘Find where you hide’ is the opening track which starts with an eruptive drum rhythm which doesn’t really decay until the chorus which starts to become more sedated and based around the melody of the vocalist. The guitars are very forceful with intruding chords but the rapid awesomeness occurs more elsewhere.
The technicality and sheer speed of some of the guitar riffs is insane, and they’re not even all solos just accompaniment for the vocal line, more like intermingling melodies though. You can hear this clearly in ‘Deep Sea Avenue’ just casually running up scales with the aggressive vocal line before settling on unsettling chords. Even the bass has some epic shredding time in ‘Face for lust’ not what you expect to come from he sudden opening in the sound. These guys also strip back in this track with a tranquil acoustic opening with a harp like synth, sounds very uncharacteristic but blends into the intense riffs rather well.
A true example of great musicianship and something you can be proud to call modern metal, a great album.
