Here at Mosh we love us a bit of pop punk and though we constantly complain about none of it being “ground-breaking” or “new”, we still really dig it. And lucky for us, pop punk band Handguns have just dropped their new album Disenchanted.
Like most pop punk albums, Disenchanted is upbeat, fun and energetic, so obviously I like it. But here are 5 specific reasons why I think Disenchanted is a pretty solid pop punk album:
- Vocals – Taylor Eby’s vocals have this raw, punk vibe about them, weirdly more so than any other vocalist from the modern pop punk scene. I like the strained, raw sound that accompanies the bouncy, upbeat melodies.
- Random talking in tracks – The talking in ‘Self Portrait’ and ‘Carbon Copy Elitist’ is pretty amusing.
- The song ‘Conjuring My Youth’ – It’s one of the standout songs on the album. It has more of a sad, emo vibe but with the punchy, upbeat melody that every pop punk song must have.
- They don’t really sound like anyone else – Though it’s clear to see that the band take influences from other pop punk crews like The Story So Far and Neck Deep, I can tell them apart from those bands. They have more of an offbeat, “the people’s band” vibe to them. They almost sound like a more punk rock little brother of those bigger groups…. it’s hard to explain what that actually means; it’s just kind of a feeling I get.
- The slowed down, Bowling For Soup-esque drum parts in ‘The Worst In Me’ (yeah, I don’t what to call it) – Sick track. Definitely one of the bests.
Disenchanted is an energetic, fast-paced pop punk album that literally doesn’t stop, not even for a second (okay, maybe for a second). So if you want something chill, you’re looking in the wrong place. If you want something to party to with your pizza-loving homeboys, then this is your album.
