2 Chainz – Freebase EP

Lately, it has felt as though that the name 2 Chainz has found itself following on from the words ‘featuring’ in almost every song from the biggest talents in rap and hip- hop today. While it doesn’t hurt to collaborate on hit singles with one’s friends and peers, in the case of 2 Chainz, it did ultimately damage his credibility as what we were hearing, closely resembled a pissed up YouTube viral with two moderately comedic white guys, impersonating black rappers and the apparent clichés practiced by all involved in the genre. In short, 2 Chainz ‘features’ were not impressive at all.

The reason that we have such as profound dislike for the rappers appearances in other rapper’s songs, is because the world seemed to be laughing at 2 Chainz, as one of those pissed up white guys and his lyrical ability was disappointingly overlooked with “she got big booty so I call her big booty”, seemingly the stand out line from the rappers last year or so. This comedy rap took away what 2 Chainz’ newly released Freebase EP restores- a guy who is a serious player in the rap game.

‘Trap Back’ opens the experience with a beat courtesy of producers, Street Symphony 808 and Elite, which compliments the relentless flow of 2 Chainz as he buries his rap comic facade and embraces the real deal rapper within. 2 Chainz comes at us with a flow and rhythm which delivers that notorious rap conviction. ‘Trap back’ is a thorough rap creation wrapped in the beat of tomorrow.

The EP’s title track boasts a furiously energetic flow propelled by the stand out ecstasy beat of producer, Honorable C.N.O.T.E, which flows into ‘Flexin On My Baby Mama’, our stand alone track which defines 2 Chainz’ unremitting spits and his true ability to make any beat his own.

First single to be released off of the EP, ‘Wuda Cuda Shuda’, ft. Lil Boosie, is an unforgiving anthem which celebrates what it is to be 2 Chainz, and speaks down on all of those who aren’t. ‘Crib In My Closet’, is perhaps the most adventurous of tracks on Freebase with features coming from two of the most prominent faces of modern day rap, A$AP Rocky and Rick Ross, and a beat from daring producers, Metro Boomin and 808 Mafia. The beat is cinematic and showcases 2 Chainz’ spits as some of the best today.

Freebase is brought to a close by ‘They Know’, and if there is one thing which we can possibly relate this to, it is that we know that 2 Chainz is the one to watch right now. Featuring Cap 1 and Ty Dolla $ign, who provide the track with soothing melodies, ‘They Know’ is 2 Chainz showcasing his own self, and acts almost as an odyssey to his career and what he means to rap.

2 Chainz says that he released this EP for the streets, but we say that Freebase is for rap.
