HTF caught up with the former ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Performance of the Year’ Don’t Flop Champion, Lunar C. The Yorkshireman aged 21 is a legend in the rap battle world but now is aiming to be a legend in the rap game with his ‘Good Times and Dead Brain Cells EP‘ coming out September 16th. Here’s how our meeting went…
HTF: Here with Lunar C at Apartment 58, tell us a bit about the new EP?
LC: My new EP is called ‘Good Times & Dead Brain Cells’ its out on the 16th September yeah I’m very happy with it, worked with a lot of cool people, cool producers on there yeah I look forward to you hearing it.
HTF: From the sound of “Back on the Step”, it seems like your sound has become a lot more mature than people who know you from your history with Don’t Flop might expect. Are we going to see a different, more grown-up Lunar C on this EP, and what experiences have fed into it?
LC: Definitely we will see another side to me maybe a more grown up, sensible side but also I would like to say the other side of me is still there if not even more so like their some crazy stuff on there too like if you’ve heard ‘Free Weed For Single Mother’s then you probably know that but what’s kind of been the turning point is just taking my music more seriously like t kind of happened naturally with that if I’m honest just touching on more subject and getting deeper with my concepts.
HTF: You landed a couple of great features from Scrufizzer and Mic Righteous on “Back On The Step”. Who else would you like to work with?
I would like to work with Remus a bit more I done a track with him on Rascals new EP but I would definitely like to work with him a little bit more. I would like to do a track with Maestro I’ve wanted to work with him for quite a while, Naughty Boy, rudimental their sick, Dream McClean’s pretty sick.
HTF: What’s the best album you’ve heard this year?
LC: Even though all the recent ones came out like Jay – Z’s and J.Cole, I still probably rate Kendrick’s and A$AP’s album more if I’m honest even though they came out earlier in the year, I think people are overlooking them. I reckon they were the two best albums of the year.
HTF: Describe a typical 24 hours as Lunar C.
LC: Recently there hasn’t been a typical day at all because everyday has been so different with the gigs and being in the studio or like doing this – interviews and freestyles. recently it’s all been up in the air but usually it consists of me waking up, smoking a lot of weed, bumming about and when I’m not doing that I’m either at the studio or doing a show.
HTF: The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chilli is supposedly up to 8 times as powerful as a ghost chilli and can be as intense as pepper spray. When are you going to tackle it and make another chilli-eating video for YouTube?
LC: This is where it needs to end, the first chilli that we got that I did a video of it wasn’t the hottest chilli but we just did it because – I eat ‘Reggae Reggae’ sauce and I’m panting for air, I have the weakest tongue in the world I’m not very good with spicy food so that’s why we did it in the first place, this was like the top 5 hottest chillies so we did that one and then we got the Naga Buta which at the time was the hottest chilli and then in the same week a new hottest chilli in the world just came out of nowhere and everyone is asking me to eat it but I really don’t want to, hopefully my music does well enough that I don’t have to eat chilli’s on YouTube for views.
HTF:You’ve taken a break from battling to focus on your music, but the battles you had with Don’t Flop were massively popular and you have a big following that wants to see you doing it again. When will your next battle be, and who would you like to go against?
LC: Not even if, it’s when (laughs) I don’t have a battle planned and I honestly don’t plan to do one at all but if one did come along I would like to battle Eminem or Drake (laughs). In a serious light I don’t even think about it at the moment I don’t have a battle planned but if a really high profile battle came along I probably wouldn’t be able to turn it down.
HTF: Where are you aiming to be in 5 years’ time?
LC: If I’m not still doing music in 5 years time I would like to have some kind of business that was built up through what I’m doing now, I’m working on a lot of business that was built up through what I’m doing now, I’m working on a lot of different stuff, I have my own clothing line that’s doing pretty well at the moment but hopefully my music is a lot more well known in 5 years whether I’m still doing it or not and hopefully my clothing company is a lot more bigger and I have my fingers in a lot more pies and money.
HTF: Where are you aiming to be in 50 years’ time?
LC: In 50 years time! Alive! that’s it, if I’m alive I’m happy in 50 years time, I don’t honestly think I’ll be alive in 50 years time, I don’t expect to be doing much at all.
HTF: If the Queen died, but it turned out she was a huge Don’t Flop fan and declared you the next King, what would you do with your new-found power?
LC: I would make a new law that was ‘Free Weed For Single Mothers’.
