Krista is a name that may not be instantly recognisable in the world of music at the moment, but we are about to introduce you to an artist who’s diverse upbringing is only matched by her music. Hailing from the streets of Brooklyn, Krista’s latest single ‘Hypnotised’ has already been causing waves and has been featured on ARTISTdirect, AOL, Yahoo!, MTV, LOGO, Music Choice and more and has recently been remixed by NY famed club DJ Johnny Vicious.
We caught up with this superstar in the making for an exclusive Hit the Floor interview to find out more….
HTF: Hi Krista, thanks for taking the time out to speak to us here at Hit the Floor, how are you?
Krista: I’m great, thank you for the opportunity.
HTF: You’ve put your current single ‘Hypotized’ out as a free download, how would you describe the song to those who have yet to hear it.
Krista: The new single is about breaking up with a guy and instead of being sad about it. Hitting the clubs to let the music take control. It’s a very dancy, vibrant track. There is some singing and some rhyming and its definitely infectious.
HTF: You dropped the video early June, how much fun did you have making it? It looked like you really enjoyed yourself.
Krista: I had such a good time shooting this video, I would have to say it was one of my all time favorite experiences so far in my career. All of my friends came out to be in the video and support me :-)
HTF: You have an Italian mum and a Puerto Rican father, how have you embraced these 2 cultures in to your own style of music?
Krista: Although as a little girl I did learn how to sing in Spanish first before English, I don’t really feel like my mixed background has anything to do with the type of music I create. Its more what ive experienced in life growing up in Brooklyn that dictates my material.
HTF: A lot of artists seem to work within the boundaries of one genre but that doesnt seem to be the case with yourself, how would you describe your style of music?
Krista: I like to describe my genre as “Hip Pop”- it’s a fusion of hiphop, rock, R&B and pop. Though on this new record I embraced the elements of dance music, I love fusing genres and creating genre hybrid songs. It’s a great time for pop music right now because pop encompasses so many different styles of music.
HTF: Which artists would you say most inspire you?
Krista: Many artists inspire me. But Pink and Katy perry really inspire me to just be me and push the envelope when it comes to musical boundries. I would also have to say Bono for many reasons: one reason being his incredible outlook on the world and how we can make it a better place. Jlo and Shakira definitely inspire me to stay fit, and lately, Adele really inspires me to be a better singer. I was just telling a friend the other day that I had been waiting since Alicia Keys Songs in A Minor for a record like 21.
HTF: What was the last album that you bought?
Krista: I know this sounds bad but I dont buy records much, though I did purchase Adele’s 21. Worth every penny :-)
HTF: Given the chance to collab with anyone who would you choose and why?
Krista: I would love to do a track with David Guetta. I am just in love with his style. Sing a hook for Tinie Tempah or do a track with Nero. Collab with Robyn. I would love to do a tack with M.I.A., sing a hook for Eminem as well, though Skylar Grey did such a great job on his last song. It would also be fun to do a song with Katy Perry, and maybe Fergie.
HTF: You also write and produce your music, how important do you think it is to be able to do that.
Krista: I’m really involved in the writing because it’s my life that most of the material is based on and I feel it is very important to be hands-on all around because you wanna be 100% happy with what’s being put out there with your name attatched. You always want to make sure you stay true to the messages you’re trying to send to your fans.
HTF: When you do you manage any free time, what do you like to do?
Krista: Whenever I get some free time I like to nap lolz and watch movies or hang out at home. I’m a homebody on my downtime and I like my rest.
HTF: Are there any plans for an album?
Krista: I am currently working on a new album and im adding some new musical elements into the mix which I am very excited about.
HTF: Will you be coming over to the UK in the future to perform?
Krista: Performing in the UK is something I’ve always wanted to do. Although it is too early to tell, I have every intention on making my way out there soon!
HTF: Thanks for taking the time out, is there anything else you would like to add?
Krista: To everyone just discovering me, take your time to live with the music. I like to create songs that speak for those who like to hide there true feelings about what we all go through in this crazy world.
