Benny Banks had a massive 2012 where he signed to a major record label, dropped underground smash “Bada Bing”. He also seemed he made hit records with everyone from the likes of Dappy to Mac Miller. Last year it was a little quiet which sucked for us fans, but really Banks was just enjoying life. Banks returns with a sold out show and determined attitude to succeed. HTF caught up with the man himself moments he was to perform at his comeback show to hear his plans for the year and his thoughts on the Urban scene in general.
HTF: How does it feel to be at your sold put comeback show?
B: It’s exciting still; I’ve been looking forward to it.
HTF: So why didn’t we get an album?
B: I don’t really think I had enough resources to make the album at the time. I didn’t have too many producers. The people I was working with weren’t really the best people for me. And I didn’t really have a good work ethic.
HTF: So will there be a big difference between your mixtapes and the album?
B: Yeah, I’d like to say so. I wanna make my album this year, but there’s no release date or anything like that.
HTF: So have you got a good team around you now?
B: Yeah it’s much better now. It’s more of a foundation I’ve just got people I love around me.
HTF: Are you eager to get out there and perform?
B: Yeah I’ve been itching to do it still. I’ve just been waiting for the right time, so I thought maybe to start 2014 with a headline show.
HTF: What are your influences?
B: Life really, I wouldn’t put it down to no rapper.
HTF: Is there anyone that keeps you on your toes? Makes sure you’re constantly making new music?
B: Not really I keep myself on my toes. I’m my own drive.
HTF: Where do you see yourself in the scene?
B: I feel like the scene’s growing, and I feel like I’m part of the growth.
HTF: Did you always want to be a rapper?
B: I just did my thing man, I didn’t grow up wanting to be a rapper.
HTF: Does the honesty in your music ever come into conflict with your real life?
B: Kind of, but it’s a learning curve init? I’m outspoken I say what I think init?
HTF: Do you ever feel the need to hold back?
B: Sometimes things get blown out of proportion. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s just beyond me init? It’s the way I am, I’m older so I’m stuck in my ways.
HTF: Do you plan to sign another record deal?
B: Whatever happens happens. Just let nature take its course.
HTF: When your fans are begging for more music, is it still “whatever happens, happens”?
B: With my fans, I wanna give them more, but I’m only human init? It’ll all come at the right time.
HTF: Ok thanks a lot, good luck with the show.
