This week marks a landmark week for Katy Perry, not only in her domestic territory of the United States, but around the world.
Today, the pop star was revealed as the top certified digital recording artist, ever.
With 72 million cumulative digital single certifications, Perry is the most certified digital artist by the Recording Industry Association of America, more commonly known as the RIAA.
She is followed by Rihanna with an accumulation of 52 million digital single certifications, and then closely by Taylor Swift with 51 million.
Perry’s achievement includes a global 9x platinum certification for her 2010 single ‘Firework’, in addition to 16 platinum digital single awards and 7x platinum certifications for ‘California Gurls’ and ‘E.T.’.
The singer recently revealed what it means to be a positive role model and that she hopes people don’t envy her fame and admire her work instead: “I’m aware that people look up to me, but I hope it’s more an inspirational thing and not like, ‘Katy Perry makes these decisions for herself, so therefore I’ll make decisions based on those Katy Perry makes’, because that’s not how anyone should live their life. But I hope they’re inspired by my hard work, my ambition, and my integrity.”
