May we present one of the UK’s most exciting new pop acts, Oh My!
Oh My! are made up of northern girls Alex and Jade and chances are you may have already heard this duo from their first tasty pop release ‘Run This Town’ and current dance floor belter ‘Kicking & Screaming’. With the girl’s getting heavy rotation on the HTF office playlist, we thought it be best to set HTF reporter Sophie Eggleton the task of having a chat with the girls to find out more! Could Oh My! be the next Mel & Kim? Let’s find out!
HTF: Hi girls! How are you today?
OM: We’re both fine thank you!
HTF: Your name was taken from the Tweet feat Missy Elliot song (an acoustic version by the girls can be viewed on Youtube) – Are all your influences as cool or do you have some cheesy or cringe artists in your armory too?
OM: Our influences are Tinie, Katy B, Example, Destiny’s Child and All Saints! We think they’re all pretty cool, nothing to cringe but everyone has their guilty pleasures!
HTF: You met at school. Were you those kids that would always put on shows for friends and family? Did you always envisage a musical future together?
OM: YES we both put shows on for family and friends! Anything from b*witched to ‘Mr bojangles’ (we were young then), so I guess a musical future was inevitable!
HTF: Who brings what to the table in terms of your music and personalities? ( e.g is one tidy, the other chaotic etc)
OM: When it comes to our music Alex is quite deep and likes to come with a topic and myself (Jade) I like to add a cheeky line with some attitude behind it, which tends to involve abusing some boy or other!
With other things we are completely the opposite (opposite attract)… Alex loves old music e.g early Michael Jackson where as I love rap and UK Garage!
HTF: Example has been writing some songs with you, how did this come about?
OM: We met on the off-chance in the studio! We threw banter backwards-and-forwards and we pretty much hit it off straight away, so he started on his mission to write songs with us.
HTF: Women are riding high in the charts at the moment. Some suggest that some of the artists are style/shock over substance, what do you think? What do you think your USP is?
OM: We don’t try to be anyone else just Jade and Alex, we’re girls who have fun and don’t take themselves too seriously. And obviously we have GREAT music!
HTF: Your cool style is likely to be extremely covetable, does it daunt you that so many eyes will be on what you wear and look like?
OM: Yes a little we just hope that no one catches us walking to the shop in our trackie bottoms, lol! But to be honest we haven’t really thought about it that way. Can understand why people may think its daunting but everyone has lazy day!
HTF: How do you feel about being role models for your fans?
OM: Role models is a huge deal and we feel flattered that we have that opportunity to set an example! Young people need good people to look up to and we hope we can feel the shoes!
HTF: You did a school tour, children are notoriously honest to the point of brutal, any fun incidents to report?
OM: Fun incidents! Lol! Humm where do we start….. We had back flipping of the stage, mosh pits, t shirt grabbing!
Kids are great for telling the truth we had some little dots covering their ears hopefully not because the music wasn’t rubbish but because it was loud lol!
HTF: You’ve started a monthly club night in Shoreditch, is DJing useful in gaging what people are into at the moment… Can it influence your own sound?
OM: We started djing because we love music, and it’s great to be able to play out our own tracks alongside ones we love by other artists! It’s a great laugh and our last one we did was packed so we must be doing something right! Little Boots’ is coming to DJ at the next one!
HTF: You have started appearing on some very popular TV shows…. does setting foot on the Hollyoaks set and sitting on the Freshly Squeezed sofa feel surreal? Does it give you a sense of things really happening for the band?
OM: Of course- were still getting used to doing TV, it’s a completely different ball-game to live performance, so it is surreal – but a lot of Fun. And It’s so weird watching it back! In a year we’ve gone from schools tour too popular TV shows, which is very very exciting.
HTF: You filmed Kicking and Screaming in Copenhagen, how have you found the whole process of making videos.. do you feeling completely at ease in front of the camera and using acting skills?
OM: Actually, its probably the only time we get a bit shy, obviously nerves kick in, but hopefully even Beyonce gets nervous still! Our videos have been super fun to shoo, plus we always work with great people that make us full comfortable!
HTF: Being pop stars requires you to travel relentlessly whether it be through touring or promo, how do you/will you cope with being away from home and it’s comforts?
OM: We are actually cool with the being away thing – we just don’t like long journeys, so we’ve taken to carrying a pillow in the car. We do miss our home cooked dinners – eating and the service stations is grim – but it’s all worth it!
HTF: Apart from perhaps red velvet cupcakes what would we find on your rider list ( and what would be on your list if anything was possible)
OM: For Alex there has to be chocolate, and Jade would need Red Bull. Were pretty low maintenance but if we could have anything in the world it would probably be an all-you-can-eat Nandos buffet in every dressing room!
HTF: You definitely appear to have a cheeky side to your personalities, should tour buddies be aware of possible pranks and mischief?
OM: Yes! Haha we love to create a bit of harmless mayhem! Our banter often means taking the piss out of each other, so I wouldn’t advise coming on tour with us if you can’t take the joke!
HTF: Your first proper single Dirty Dancer is out in October…it refers to those too cool for school people who ignore the fun of a dance-floor .. I’m guessing you girls throw some serious shapes…. any signature moves? What songs get your dancing feet going the most?
OM: Signature moves… Hum, can’t really put them into words you will have to come check us out at Club Oh My! Jade loves Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out and Alex gets too excited when Ceelo Green, “f**k you” comes on! We love to dance like an idiots, we don’t really give a shit what anyone thinks
HTF: Was it important that your music is of the type to persuade people to get moving?
OM: Yes course! we love to have a dance and we want people to listen to our music and bob their heads along, even break-out into free styling if your daring enough!
HTF: What should people expect from a Oh My live experience?
OM: A lot of jumping – kinda like an aerobic work out, a master class in Beyonces signature moves, and a whole lot of attitude!
HTF: Goals for the coming year?
OM: A chart single, our very own tour and lots of #ohmylove … And we’d quite like to meet Beyonce and Justin Timberlake if any one can hook that up!
HTF: And finally….tell Hit The Floor something surprising about you?
OM: Alex used to play football for Leicester City! Would you ever of guessed that?
The first song Jade publicly sang as a child was Charmaine Del a Rosa by Plan B, probably not suitable for a child!
