Johnny Marr Hits Back At The Use Of ‘Please Please Please’ In John Lewis Advert

The Smiths Guitarist Takes To Twitter…

It’s that time of the year again when many eagerly await (sometimes not admittedly) the season of Christmas ad campaigns to see what delightful concussions of old songs, a bit of consumerism and a montage of warm seasonal images have been thrown together. Perhaps arguably two of the most popular efforts in previous years are that of Coca Cola and John Lewis.

Last year saw Ellie Goudling cover the Elton John classic ‘Your Song’ for the John Lewis Christmas ad campaign and this year we have a delightful rendition of The Smith’sPlease Please Please‘. However, despite the fact that when watching the ad it does bring a tear to the eye (and we can’t blame the mulled wine just yet) many fans of The Smith’s have expressed their distaste and disappointment that the song has been used to support the Christmas consumerism machine. However, Johnny Marr,The Smith’s guitarist took to Twitter to share his feelings on the subject by saying “Writing ‘Please Please…’ one Friday in ’84 is one of the best memories of my life. This ad has not sullied that memory one bit”. Well said Johnny.

Are fans taking it all too seriously and isn’t that what Christmas is about in a modern context? or do you think that this is one step too far and it has destroyed your love of The Smith’s? As always let us know what you think!
