Interview: Drenge (HTF Exclusive)

We speak to Eoin of Drenge to find out more about this great upcoming band!

Drenge are a band that if you haven’t heard of you should probably go and listen to right now. The two brothers Eoin and Rory are the only members of the band but what a sound they create, a band who aren’t producing music to make money but to express a personal desire to make music. Having toured and played festivals this year including Glastonbury, Latitude and Reading and Leeds the boys are starting to get quite the following. Their sound is dark and atmospheric and is just what we need in the industry at the moment; something that packs a punch. HTF : So you released your self-titled album on August the 19^th, how well do you think it’s gone down with the public?

Eoin : Er I think it’s gone down pretty well, we’re quite happy with it.

HTF : Your newest single ‘Bloodsports’ was given away free on iTunes a couple weeks back, do you think this has helped with the publicity?

Eoin : I guess so, it came out at the start of the year and there’s a video and everything and it also came out on vinyl at the start of the year. So we just put it up for free on iTunes to give it a bit of a boost, it’s one of the strongest songs on the record. If people didn’t know who we were that helped.

HTF : So your name, my first thoughts were maybe a grunge band, is that what you were going for? What’s it’s origin?

Eoin : No we kind of picked it because it wasn’t an English language word, it’s the Danish word for boys but pronounced in an English accent. We just didn’t want to have an English language name because I just think it can already bring images to mind.

HTF : Who do you inspire to be like or sound like? Is there anyone in particular?

Eoin : There’s never really been any aspirations in particular, we never really have seen much point in trying to be like someone else. I think if you’re a musician and your writing your own stuff you should try and be as original or true to yourself as you can.

HTF : I was looking on your website and I came across your influence list, particularly liked the burrito and wrap reference, but I’m curious to know who Margaret is?

Eoin : She is our next-door neighbor, and she really hates our band. The first time we practiced she came round and tried to break into the house. (Laughs) Yeah, she hates our band.

HTF: Brilliant (Laughs) .. So what words of advice would you have for up and coming bands?

Eoin : I have very little advice, just if that you’re confident in what you do and what you do is original and has some sort of purpose. For me it’s much more of a personal thing, it’s never been something to make a career of, I find it really strange that we’ve done really well and we can do this as a full time job.

HTF: Are you excited to be playing outside of the UK or have you done it before?

Eoin : Yeah we’ve done it a bunch of times, we played in Paris, we supported a guy called Christopher Owens at the start of the year, that was amazing.

HTF : Is it a completely different atmosphere to playing in the UK?

Eoin : Yeah everybody seems a lot more focused on the music, whereas in the UK there’s the Iphone in one hand and a drink in the other. In Europe the Iphone‘s get turned off, no-one really drinks that much and they all kind of just wanna go to watch the band

HTF : Is there anything else you’d like to add for Hit The Floor today?

Eoin : Er, have a great day!
