So it’s nearly time for us all to celebrate another year ending. Hopefully 2014 has brought you a few new favourite bands that you’ll be following for the next few years, but if it hasn’t do not worry. 2015’s breed of indie is just as promising (if not more so). Each day in the lead up to Christmas and the New Year we will be bringing you HTF Indie’s top tips for acts who have the potential to steal your musical hearts away.
Source: www.facebook.comLeeds has long been a hub of musical talent and its latest export comes in the form of Menace Beach, a five-piece originating from the area. Something of a supergroup, the band is made up of singers Ryan Needham (former member of Komakino) and Liza Violet (currently of Department M), along with Nestor Matthews of Sky Larkin, Matt Spalding of You Animals and MJ of Hookworms. If that pool of instrumental prowess was not inciting enough, they can also call on Pulled Apart by Horses’ Robert Lee and Paul Draper of Mansun to back them up.
The band formed in 2012 and have released 4 EPs since then, most notably Lowtalker. They are set to release their eagerly-anticipated debut album, Ratworld, on January 19, and there is still time to snap up tickets for their UK tour that kicks off in the same month in Glasgow.
Menace Beach’s name was inspired by a 90s Nintendo video game and their sound harks back to the alternative music of that decade. Alluring, enticing intros are sure to become their trademark as each song they’ve released up to now can boast one of these. The members flaunt their experience in tracks that are artfully woozy, a fuzziness that gets contrasted with playful basslines. Tracks like ‘Tennis Court’ and ‘Drop Outs’ are sure to be future fan favourites, and the energetic, lyrically intriguing nature of ‘Come on Give Up’ tells us that next year’s debut is one worth getting excited about.
