H.U.L.I (aka House U LykIt) is a Manchester house music collective managed by Romes Samuels and Saji B and looks to bring a new wave of urban house to the masses. Among the collective are DJ’s Dre, Subz, Dumplin and Pierre Wallace. H.U.L.I put on their own club nights and have recently released their ‘House U LykIt’ EP so our Manchester reporter Dorian caught up with some of the guys to find out more about what they do and where it all started.

HTF: What is H.U.L.I??
RS: Huli isn’t a movement but pod of ideas, influences helping push the movement of house
HTF: Where did the idea come from?
DRE: Saji had the name in his head from a few years ago but we as a collective chose a pun as our umbrella name.
RS: The name was based on the collective doing a night.
HTF: What influences what you make or play?
SBZ: Southport weekender from four years ago was my link to house.
RS: 2 step evolution took me through to house
DRE: The evolution of music, keeping my ears open and touch out there to what makes me feel a certain way
DUM: Southport weekender but then the tech of funky house made me want to try my hand on what I could produce.
HTF: Where have you all come from in order to get to where you are now?
DRE: Garage as a DJ listening to Karl ‘Tuff’ Enuff Brown and Kenny Dope from there I went in to bassline with massive tracks like ‘Manny Man’ and ‘Breaking My Heart’.
SBZ: Starting off as an MC going to bassline known for ‘Be With Me’ and ‘Bad Gyal Bass’ feat Shystie
DUM: Influences came from garage to produce most genres like grime, rng, funky and now house.
RS: I’ve had a friendship and association with Dre and Saji B moving into events and nights known for grrww riddim originally hard house bantons.
HTF: How do you differ from other DJ’s and collectives doing the same genre?
SBZ: Our own individual styles and preferences,
DRE: Providing the raver with the music that we know they want to hear. With house the skys the limit interms of what elements you can bring to the plate.
Where can we hear your music?
DUM: Sound clouds and radio play
RS: Events we play what we produce.
HTF: Huli as a concept is massive but whats next?
RS: After the launch of the EP it will be Huli’s solo projects and taking it to different areas.
HTF: Who do you personally play for?
SBZ: For the dancing crew, for the ladies reaction which makes my set bubble up to another level to increase the vibe and the open minded raver
DRE: From the seasoned and educated house raver
DUM: As an entertainer I play for the reaction of the crowd
