The BBC has commissioned a major new period drama named Taboo starring Tom Hardy, who will also executive produce the series with acclaimed director Sir Ridley Scott.
The Dark Knight Rises star will play a rogue adventurer who sets out to build a shipping empire, pitting him against the East India Company. The drama will be set in 1813 and will see Hardy’s character seek vengeance for his father’s death after returning from Africa with 14 diamonds.
Hardy, the star of films including Inception and Warrior, said: “We’re creating a flagship British drama for this generation”.
Gladiator director Ridley Scott said Hardy’s character “will become iconic”.
The series will reunite Hardy with his Locke director and screenwriter Steven Knight, who has written the drama’s script.
The series will be a 8 x 60-minute drama. Filming for Taboo will begin in the UK in January next year.
